::only the western RR got subsidies to build in uninhabited areas.  The GOP strongly supported the land grants...I can't receall Sumner commenting on the issue. The Massachusetts RR did not get subsidies. [[User:Richard Jensen|Richard Jensen]] 13:37, 18 June 2007 (CDT)
