Can someone please turn this into a readable article that includes some well-informed information about the economic issues involved and moves a great deal of its secondary matter to other pages. I realise that this is mainly a transfer from Wikipedia, but in my opinion it falls far short of the standard we should require for a Citizendium article. I am now doing some pruning of irrelevant and inaccurate material in order to make room for the addition of the material that the article lacks. [[User:Nick Gardner|Nick Gardner]] 16:46, 5 February 2009 (UTC)
I have now done most of the "houskeeping work" of removing the irrelevant and the obviously inaccurate, and re-ordering the remainder. There is still scope for a lot of pruning (to mix metaphors!) but  I hope that I have done enough to encourage contributions from people who understand the issues. Despite the lack of response to the above, I have continued with the housework in the hope that by clearing away the opinionated assertions of the previous draft, I will have made room for evidence-backed contributions  from  more thoughtful American historians.
