I am a professional visual artist and hobbyist musician living in Minneapolis, Minnesota. I was born in South Carolina, but grew up in Chattanooga, Tennessee. In elementary school I was the kid who could draw. In high school I was a band geek (alto and baritone sax in jazz band; bass, contralto, and contrabass clarinet in concert band; drum major in marching band). I also played in a few rock bands outside of school (guitar and vocals).
I attended the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in my home town, receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting and drawing and a Bachelor of Arts in anthropology (both magna cum laude) in 1996. I switched to making mostly three-dimensional art when I went to the University of Minnesota on a graduate fellowship in 1997. In graduate school I fulfilled my required out-of-area credits in the history of medicine, which became important to the content of my art. I received a Master of Fine Arts in 2000.
Since college I have been an exhibiting artist based in the Twin Cities. My work generally falls under the heading of mixed-media and multimedia sculpture and installation. I have shown mostly in Minnesota and other midwestern/plains states, with a few shows in Tennessee and New York. I have taught beginning and advanced level sculpture at the University of Minnesota and the College of Visual Arts in St. Paul.
I also play guitar and keyboards and occasionally sing for the Seagraves, a pop rock band.
