A hot toddy is a warm beverage, usually alcoholic, most often served in cold weather. Hot toddies are traditionally drunk after coming in from the cold, and at bedtime, particularly if one is suffering from a cold, as an aid to sleep.
There are many variations on hot toddy recipes, but in general terms, hot toddies are made by steeping or simmering spices and citrus peel in sweetened water, tea, tisane or juice, then adding a quantity of spirits before serving.
