Steven Allan Spielberg (b. 18 December 1946 Cincinnati, Ohio), film writer, producer, and director, has enjoyed one of the most remarkable careers in Hollywood history. He is the only director to have achieved the highest grossing film of all time in three different decades – Jaws (1975), E.T.: the Extra-Terrestrial (1982), and Jurassic Park (1993), a remarkable feat. The films he has directed have collectively grossed over $7.5 billion worldwide, generating for Spielberg a personal fortune estimated by Forbes magazine at $3 billion. In 2007 he was Number 287 on the Forbes List of World Billionaires. He is the winner of three Academy Awards: Best Film (Producer, Schindler’s List, 1993), Director (Schindler’s List), and Director (Saving Private Ryan, 1998). Stanley Kubrick, widely hailed as one of the greatest of world filmmakers, personally chose Spielberg to film Kubrick’s long-gestating project, A.I.: Artificial Intelligence (2001). Spielberg is still highly active in the cinema, and is presently at work on the fourth installment in the Indiana Jones series for executive producer George Lucas, one of Spielberg’s oldest friends in Hollywood. “He is arguably the most influential popular artist of the twentieth century,” said Michael Crichton, “and arguably the least understood.” Describing himself, Spielberg has said, “I dream for a living.”
