The FreeS/WAN site was still up as of mid-2010, although the project shut down in 2002. It has full documentation for the software.
Two descendants are still available:
- Strongswan, from a European team who added X.509 support to FreeS/WAN
- Openswan, from a Canadian-based team that includes some of the original FreeS/WAN people
RFC 4322 "Opportunistic Encryption using the Internet Key Exchange (IKE)", written by members of the FreeS/WAN team, documents the OE protocol.
