Regent University was founded in 1977 by Rev. Pat Robertson, as a center of "Christian thought and action." It was incorporated as Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN) University, Robertson's media outlet, but renamed in 1990. It received regional accreditation in 1984.
The university was endowed by CBN, first with $109.3 million from sale of the stock of the former Family channel, and then a $117 million endowment gift from CBN, the largest to a private university.
