Interesting malaria story

Not my area, so I'm not really sure how significant it is, but this looks interesting: http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/2010/jan/20/glaxo-malaria-drugs-public-domain

Next steps

This is catching my interest, so I'll be doing more. My immediate intention is to adapt some parasite life cycle drawings and label where the various drugs work.

Does anyone have special knowledge of the newer protection techniques? I have found some papers about minor modification to African traditional housing that is very conducive to cheap installation of insecticide-impregnated material. There is a U.S. military report, but I'm not sure how seriously to take it, of a system of detecting mosquitoes in a field installation and shooting them down with a laser.

I'll try to pick up on Sandy's link and developmental drugs, but if anyone feels more competent to take on the challenges of malaria vaccine -- you probably are. Howard C. Berkowitz 14:07, 30 May 2010 (UTC)

Numbers question

We have "More than one million people die of malaria every year, ...", then a paragraph later "nearly 881 000 deaths in 2006". Should the first one change to "Nearly a million"?

Nit-picking department: I do not like "nearly 881,000" because the "nearly" does not seem to go well with the fairly high precision number. I'd prefer "about 880,000" or "over 880,000", whichever is appropriate. or even "nearly 900,000". Sandy Harris 04:55, 27 October 2010 (UTC)

I didn't write that section, and indeed have just found 2001-2004 data challenging it as understated, with which I'll update the article until I have better data. Howard C. Berkowitz 05:50, 27 October 2010 (UTC)

Booze as anti-malarial?

There's a paper: "Effect of alcohol on growth of Plasmodium falciparum" http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10890137 The abstract includes "Malarial parasites are strongly inhibited by ethanol concentrations which are attainable by extensive alcohol consumption."

I know tonic water originally had (still has?) quinine. But does the gin in a gin & tonic also help? Sandy Harris 05:04, 16 August 2011 (UTC)
