The Democratic Party (DP; 民進党 Minshintou) is a Japanese political party formed on 27th March 2016 through the merger of the Democratic Party of Japan and the Japan Innovation Party. Its Japanese name means 'Democratic Progress Party'. The party's English name is also the same as that of the forerunner of the DPJ, the short-lived Democratic Party (1996-1998).
