Rock and roll is a broad category of music typified by songs featuring an energetic drumbeat, usually accompanied by one or more guitars, a bass guitar, and possibly a electronic keyboard or piano. It is generally agreed that the music that falls within this category originated in the late 1940s and early 1950s, deriving from the existing rhythm and blues category. The name "rock and roll" comes from an African-American vernacular reference to sexual activity.

Rock and roll is frequently shortened to "rock", and encompasses genres of music, including alternative, classic rock, and some forms of pop music. As a result rock and roll usually refers to the earliest form of the music, and musicians such as Fats Domino, Little Richard, Elvis Presley and Carl Perkins. The white form of the music, as featuring the last two, is often called rockabilly.
