The year this photo was taken and published is almost certainly 1910, when Van der Waals received a Nobel. Not as yet knowing its other originating factors, however, it is impossible to state with certainty that it is in the public domain. The Nobel Foundation claims copyright over this image on their website;[1] however, upon direct query they stated they did not actually know who holds the copyright (see correspondence). It is known that at least two major collections hold physical copies of this photo, each created around the time of its original publication: 1) The University of Amsterdam Archives, and The Smithsonian Institution Library.[2] |
