Bonus material on Nepal?
I suspect you may have tacked on some bonus material on Nepal to this article, Indra. No big deal-- I can move it for you if it's an inconvenience. Maybe this should be at Ashram, or perhaps some variant thereof?
- Noel, "āśram system" (or "āśrama system")is actually pretty standard terminology for this subject. For example, I coincidentally have Patrick Olivelle's seminal book on the subject on my desk at the moment, and it is called 'The Āśrama System'. I suppose it would make more sense to have the article living at 'āśram' would probably be better as an article on brahmanical hermitages, or whatever. As you might infer, and in conjunction with our brand new Romanization policy, there would be a rationale for moving this article to 'āśram system' or 'āśrama system', which I would be in favor of doing soonish. mokṣa; asrama system for everyone, or just twice-born
I had two quick notes. First, when I was expanding the introduction, I reworded the section on liberation. It previously stated that the final asrama was so that one might attain reunification with the universal soul. In my understanding, this is a little too theologically precise and maybe a shade too vedantic. The point of the final stage is liberation (moksa), and in whatever form that is. I may be wrong-- this isn't my field-- and I am more than open to correction, revision or whatever. (I'm curious what Olivelle says about the issue...)
The other question I had concerned the intersection of varna and asrama. In my hazy recollection, the dharmasutras and -sastras say that the asrama system is only for those in the brahmanical varna (or maybe just for the twice-born). Can someone straighten me out? I would feel better if we could work this into the article as well, once we get the facts straightened out. Thanks, Brian P. Long 19:12, 7 May 2008 (CDT)
