Many of the references given for the parent topics cryptanalysis and cryptography discuss brute force attacks.
The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) built a machine called the "DES Cracker" specifically designed to speed up brute force against the Data Encryption Standard. The work was politically motivated, aimed at demonstrating that DES was insecure despite US government claims to the contrary. They published a book [1]
