Both head of state and head of government, the modern President of Afghanistan is elected for a four-year term; there is a 2009 Afghanistan presidential election on 20 August 2009. Hamid Karzai is the incumbent and is running for reelection.
Originally, there were three vice-presidents; now there are two. There has been much discussion of a "Chief Executive Officer" who would have some of the attributes of a head of government.
