All fish are defined by their scientific species name, which is recognized worldwide. Similar species are grouped into "genera," which in turn are grouped into families, as shown below.

A family usually contains several related genera, but sometimes only a single genus. The family name always appears in Roman type, e.g., Belontiidae.
