Aung San Suu Kyi (1945- ) is the pro-democracy opposition leader in Burma, who was put under house arrest by the military for many years since her party won an overwhelming victory in the general elections in 1990. She is a Nobel Peace Prize laureate and a recipient of several other prizes for her work to promote democracy and human rights. and the General Secretary for the National League for Democracy.
Her father was a leader in the country's struggle for independence from Great Britain.
