North Catalonia or Northern Catalonia (in Catalan Catalunya Nord, la Catalunya del Nord; in Franche la Catalogne Nord, la Catalogne du Nord), also called historically the Counties (els Comtats), is the northernmost region of the Catalan Countries (or Catalonia in a wide sense).
It belongs politically to France, where it nearly matches with the department of the Pyrénées-Orientales, excepting the area of the Fenouillèdes.
North Catalonia is not an administrative subdivision but a region defined by cultural and historical criteria.
Its main city is Perpignan.
