Senator Hakeem S. Jeffries (New York) in 2013

Hakeem Jeffries (b. 1970) has been the U.S. congressman from New York's 8th district since 2013. A Democrat, he represents part of eastern Brooklyn and southwestern Queens in New York City. On Jan. 3, 2023, Jeffries assumed the role of minority leader in the U.S. House of Representatives, taking over the position held for decades by Nancy Pelosi. Jeffries is the first person of color elected to the position.

Jeffries served in the New York state assembly from 2007 to 2012. Before that, he was a corporate lawyer.
