(1927-2023) a pop singer who, despite racial barriers, ascended to the upper echelons of the pop music world in the 1950s, is known for calypso songs such as “Day-O”, "Matilda", and “Jamaica Farewell", for tender ballads such as "Scarlet Ribbons", and who was a dedicated civil rights activist.
