Kiva Reardon

Kiva Reardon is a Canadian writer, editor, commentator programmer for several film festivals.[1][2][3]

Background

Reardon grew up in Toronto, Ontario, and credits watching Elwy Yost's long-running Saturday Night at the Movies, when she was a kid, with her first introduction to film studies.[4]

Reardon is bilingual in both English and French.[5]

Studies

Reardon's undergraduate degree is from McGill University, in Montreal, Quebec, in Cultural Studies, graduating in 2010.[6] She then entered a Masters of Arts program at the University of Toronto's Cinema Studies Institute, graduating in 2013. During her Masters she interned on a film by John Greyson.

Among the film-makers Reardon was influenced was Agnès Varda, and Cléo the title of her journal, was taken from the title of one of Varda's films, Cléo from 5 to 7.[7][5] She drew from those she met studying at the Cinema Studies Institute to help staff Cléo.

Career

In 2013 Reardon founded Cléo: a journal of film and feminism.[7] The journal published 19 issues.[8] It was partially supported by the Ontario Arts Council. The newly elected Doug Ford government announced extensive cuts to projects formerly supported by the Council, including Cléo.

Reardon is known as an innovative programmer of films at multiple film festivals, including the Miami Film Festival and Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival.[1]

Director Adam Benzine, in an op-ed in the National Post, quoted criticisms Reardon had made of the programmers at the 2019 Venice Film Festival, for failing to recognize female film directors in their choice of films.[2]

Variety profiled her when the 2019 TIFF opened, describing her efforts to choose a more inclusive list of films.[9]

On December 1, 2019, Reardon gave the keynote address for a film series in Sudbury that opened with Cléo from 5 to 7.[5]

In April 2022 the Production company Pastel appointed Reardon their Vice President Film.[10]
