M26 Modular Accessory Shotgun System

Developed for the U.S. Army, the M26 Modular Accessory Shotgun System (MASS) is a 12-gauge shotgun that attaches to the Picatinny rail of military rifles and carbines, such as the standard M16 rifle and M4 carbine. As shotguns become more important in specialized roles of modern combat, the modular system saves a soldier from carrying two weapons. If ncessary, it can be adapted into a standalone weapon, by attaching a pistol grip and unfolding the stock.

Combat shotguns fire lethal, nonlethal, and door-breaching rounds. Their lethal rounds are especially useful at short range, as in urban combat. Rounds designed to be nonlethal usually stun and bruise the target, but do not cause damage. Breaching rounds break door hinges and facilitate rapid entry.
