Apart from the line, the stanza is normally the smallest unit of a poem, consisting of several lines. When considered as a verse form, the stanza describes or specifies the rhyme scheme, and often the metre. The word "verse" is often used in preference to it, but this has the disadvantage that it also refers to the whole form of writing as well as the form of one of the divisions within it.
