Definition UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (2002) defined culture as "... the set of distinctive spiritual, material, intellectual and emotional features of a society or a social group..." that "encompasses, in addition to art and literature, lifestyles, ways of living together, value systems, traditions and beliefs". A modest start

Between 2000-4 as a policy-maker I had to grapple with definitions of 'culture' in drafting London's inaugural culture strategy. I place a modest counter down by including some of the text we in London came to use; just to kick off this article.

I hope and expect 'better' definitions will emerge and outstrip these first few sentences. Aladin 17:24, 12 November 2007 (CST)

You are right to make this not strictly about the anthro definition of culture, but also to cover the culture = "refinement" idea. Keep at it! Stephen Ewen 09:11, 14 November 2007 (CST)
Marvellous. I hope you and I will be strengthened by others joining in. Feel free to bring in your own passions and panache into the content and copy. Aladin 12:38, 14 November 2007 (CST)
Anyone willing to expand this article? I don't feel qualified to myself, but as at the moment it consists entirely of external quotes, it would seem to be a candidate for deletion. John Stephenson 04:37, 9 July 2008 (CDT)
I feel tempted to draw Larry into here given his philosophy credentials. In the meanwhile I will write some text; which one hoped others would have felt attracted to! Aladin 08:39, 9 July 2008 (CDT)

title

I just came across this. I know the "(social)" part of the title comes from the need to disambiguate, but it doesn't make any sense. Any ideas for a better way to disambiguate? My personal preference is to list this topic under "culture" plain and simple, but that's probably my bias showing. --Joe Quick 07:37, 13 December 2010 (UTC)

Concepts of culture

In looking up my notes on social theory, I find that the concept of culture is much used and discussed there. My notes mainly revolve around the work of Habermas, who is by no means typical, so I have not attempted to do anything more than indicate that anthropology is not the only academic area in which the concept is used. I have also added a different but related concept. The heading is dubious, and maybe it should be the subject of a different article? --Martin Wyatt 19:57, 25 August 2013 (UTC)
