Unclear phrase

It is often considered the smallest unit of language that can serve this purpose, but others have been proposed; it is not very clear what this means; which other (smaller?) phonological units would then serve exactly the same purpose as phonemes? Stefan Olejniczak 09:56, 4 December 2010 (UTC)
