My name is Paul Carrier, nearing the half century mark, was born and raised in Portland Oregon. Attended Benson Polytechnic High school where I majored in the aviation shop. Some how I ended up joining the Army in the fall of '76 on the delayed entry program, going on active duty in Aug. '77. Did basic at Ft. Leonard Wood Mo. and then Infantry school at Ft. Benning. Spent the year of '78 in Korea with 1st BN 17th INF (M) as an M113 driver/radio operator plus filling in as the assistant FDC. Rotated back to Ft Lewis and joined 2nd BN 2nd INF as a mortar gunner but after a couple of months moved to the BN maintenance section as dispatcher. I left active duty in July of '80, didn't care to put up with the dope heads in the billets.
I joined 3670th Maintenance Company, Oregon National Guard as a 45B small arm repairer. Over the next 18 years with the unit I worked my way up to the Armament Inspector position along with gaining a couple of other MOS, 45L and then 45K.
As a civilian I started out at the local community college studying mechanical engineering. After two years of school the needs of my growing family required I go back to the trade of my youth, painting. Worked for the same firm for 15 years doing custom homes and commercial new construction.
With a reorganization of 3670th my position was eliminated so I moved to a new unit, Detachment 2 Company B 145th Support Battalion as the armament section chief. After two years with the unit the sergeant providing full time unit support required surgery and as it was winter and I was not working I filled in on orders for a few months. The position opened up permanent and I was hired. Spent three years running the unit day to day as the Readiness NCO before moving back to 3670th as Readiness NCO. Two years there and then I got bumped up to 741 Corps Support BN as the assistant operations NCO. Two years there and with the unit disbanding to move 60 miles away I was fortunate to be offered a position in the Brigade Property Book Office as the Team Chief. We control the assets for a modular HBCT BN, an Engineer BN made up of a number of separate companies along with an Aviation BN and a Support BN also controlling a variety of separate units.
I’m currently going back to college to complete a degree in Military History with a goal to move to the Oregon Military Museum when I retire off active duty. Hobbies include Military history with an extensive library covering both naval and land subjects, computers, camping, photography, (Photo’s to be published in an upcoming Osprey on PT Boats) and watching motor sports (too poor to run a car of my own)
