There were three Yorktown-class aircraft carriers in the US Navy, during World War II: the USS Yorktown, USS Enterprise, and USS Hornet. Built under the terms of the Washington Naval Treaty, the carriers were deployed in several engagements through the war. USS Yorktown was sunk by a torpedo attack during the Battle of Midway in June 1942, and USS Hornet was sunk by air attack the following year. USS Enterprise survived the war but, judged to be obsolete, was put into reserve and later scrapped.
